So what does this notion of craftmanship mean for my projects in practice?

The main issue is to avoid the split between idea and making. It is common practice in many design disciplines to separate the ‘design’ from the manufacturing. The film industry is no different. So on projects that require elaborate visual effects the look and feel and designs are determined by ‘concept artists’ long before the actual visual effects are being produced.

In contrast, I invite the same people that will be responsible for actually making the effects to the conversation about what this movie will look like.
